The Lumpy Carpet!!!

The “Home Meeting” is tomorrow night at 7pm…..

Sally, the stay-at-home Mom……

And up and coming home business Dynamo……

Was hosting a Company “Home Biz Op Meeting”…..

She has recruited some friends…..

Invited some family and friends over……

Other Members with prospects are coming.....

Her ”Manager” and HIS ”Manager”…..

Were going to do the ”Presentation”……

They asked Sally to……

”Give a short ‘background’ presentation…..”

“To ‘tell’ people about YOU!!!”

Sally had been trying to work on that….

In the meantime, she had to “clean-up”….

Make her living room look outstanding……

There was something wrong with the carpet….

She couldn’t put her finger on it…..

She called a “Carpet Cleaner” to come over….

It is 10 am, her doorbell rings…..

”Right on time! Just as he promised!!”

Sally realized, as she looked at the clock…..

Opening the door, she saw a man wear a casual uniform….

Company logo on one side of his uniform shirt……

”Good morning, I am ‘Ray’ and I am here to help YOU!!”

”Ray”, was the name embroidered on his shirt..…

Sally replied, ”C’mon in, let me show you the room!”

Ray took a look at the room, ”Oh MY!!”, he exclaimed…..

”I’ll be right back!!” as he turned around and went back to his van…..

A few moments later, he came back in……

Carrying a LARGE vacuum cleaner……

With LOTS of hose attachments……

He put a few of the attachments together….

”Ma’am…, Ray said……

”Your carpet is CLEAN……”

“For some reason, it is lumpy…..”

“Allow me to ‘get out’ the lumps!!”

He stuck the end of the hose under the carpet……

Sliding it under further……

He turned on the machine……

whirrrrrr…..whirrrrr……whirrrrrr……

Was the noise of the machine……

A “lump” started moving……..

whirrrrrr…..whirrrrr……THWUMP….

He left the machine on as he pulled out the hose…..

On the end of the hose was a “clump” of stuff……

He turned off the machine……

Removed the “clump”, setting it aside…….

Stuck the hose back under the carpet……

And turned it back on……

whirrrrrr……whirrrrr……THWUMP…..

One more clump……

Another clump……

Another clump……

MORE and MORE…….

Ray starting looking closer at the clumps…..

Each clump had something written on them…..

Things like……

”Didn’t finish college”

“Recovered Alcoholic”

“Dysfunctional family”

“Up and Down Weight Loss”

“Work Two Jobs To Pay Bills”

Ray is a very smart man……

He noticed the ”Home Biz Op” pamphlets…..

On the table in the center of the room……

And the “Company” boxes stacked in a front room…..

”Ma’am……may I call you Sally??”

She nodded your head…..

”Allow ME to give YOU some advice…..”

“To succeed in YOUR business……

Sally emphatically shook her head…..

Ray continued……

”YOU are trying to portray yourself……”

“As a SUCCESSFUL Business Owner…….”

“EVERY time you talk to people…..”

“About YOUR business, you are embarrassed…..”

“About YOUR PAST!!!!”

Sally’s head drooped, as she nodded “YES”……

Ray puts his hand on her shoulder and says……

”Everytime you START to say something…..”

“About your past, you SWEEP it under the rug….”

“May I give tell YOU something serious???”

Again….she nodded…….

”PEOPLE today are hurting……”

“The economy sucks, unemployment is rising……”

“New jobs are few and far between…….”

“People are LOOKING for an income source…..”

“The ‘Home Biz Op’ route looks easy…..”

“BUT……people are VERY hesitant…..”

“To let go of what little money they have……”

“With PEOPLE who ARE NOT REAL!!!”

“YOU……Sally, have been down the SAME paths…..”

“As the people YOU are reaching…….”

“They NEED to hear that YOU have…..”

“BEEN THERE…….AND DONE THAT!!!!”

“THEN…..they will follow YOU…..”

“Because YOU have overcome……”

“What THEY are going through……”

“Take YOURSELF off of the pedestal…..”

“And WALK beside them……”

“BE REAL…..”

“BE TRUE…..”

“BE YOURSELF….”

“BE AUTHENTIC…..”

“And the rest……..My Dear…..”

“Will become HISTORY!!!!”



Sally was awestruck……

But grateful for the words…..

From a ”Carpet Cleaner”……

As Ray was packing up his equipment…..

He said, ”May I invite YOU……”

“To a Community of People……”

“That are REAL, TRUE, and AUTHENTIC…..”

“Led by a former ‘truck driver’…….”

“And a former ‘overweight housewife’……”

“Where for EVERYBODY learns how to……”

“Change Your Mind….”

“Change Your Income….”

“Change Your Life!!!”

Stop sweeping your past under it……

Don’t make TROPHIES out of YOUR past……

Just DON’T hide it……

People NEED to know where YOU have been…..

And WHERE you can TAKE them…..

Is There An Eric In YOUR Life????

I have said in previous writings….

That I have been a Volunteer Firefighter…..

For almost eight years now….

In that time, I have seen “moderate” amounts….

Of tragedy, destruction, personal injury, or loss of life…..

I have been a Lieutenant and Captain on various trucks….

I was Company Secretary for a number of years…..

But NOTHING could have prepared me…..

For what I am about to tell YOU…….

In the Spring of 2004, our Fire Company received…..

A check for 20 thousand dollars from a local widow…..

We were asked to use it wisely……

I suggested during a Business Meeting…..

”We need NEW Dress Uniforms……”

“Our old ones look like old Greyhound bus driver’s uniforms….”

“And the blue shirts purchased over time, do not match!!!”

Well….when YOU suggest, you usually end up…..

Heading up that committee!!

The uniforms we decided on cost a little over $400…..

Per firefighter……with approximately 20 interested……

We LOOKED sharp……still do!!

The committee decided to get “nameplates”…..

For every firefighter……

With or without ordering a uniform!!



At the October Business Meeting, they had arrived……

I was handing them out to people, before the meeting…..

I handed one to one man, his first name is Eric…..

He looked at it and asked me….

”What’s this for??”

I explained what it was for…..he handed it back saying…..

“You can keep it, I won’t need it after tomorrow!!”

”Ohhhh, okay!”, I said and went down the table to the next man….

A few minutes later, I heard another firefighter say……

”That was odd, Eric kissed me on the cheek and said ‘Good-bye’!”

OH MY GOD!!

It HIT me….finally, on what Eric said to me…..

I literally dropped what I was doing and headed for the door…..

I looked across the parking lot……

His car was on the other side…..

He was sitting in it…..

I headed straight for it….

After a little small talk, he asked me to sit in the car with him!!

Eric worked for a LARGE International Company…..

His building, his position, and his job

Were being eliminated at the end of the month…..

Unfortunately, Eric is a BIG man with a short fuse…..

One day, he got into a discussion with his Manager….

Such to the degree, Security walked him out….

And the local Police were outside to help, if needed!!

Because of this discussion, Eric was just terminated….

On this day that I was talking with him!!!

He was told, NOW, he lost the package he would’ve gotten….

At the end of the month!!

No severance pay….

No vacation pay….

No Health coverage…..

Eric had custody of his two kids…..

”Jason, what the HELL can I do NOW???”

“I gotta take care of my kids!!!”

A moment later, an Assistant Chief walked up to the car…..

”We cannot have a meeting without a Secretary??” he said…..

I asked him to talk to Eric…..

Before I got out of the car, I grapsed Eric’s hand and said….

”Go HOME!!! After the meeting, a bunch of US will be up…..”

“We’ll take you out drinking, if you want to, AND……..”

“DON’T DO ANYTHING STUPID!!!!!”

I went into the meeting, which had started….

Ten minutes later, the Assistant Chief walked in and sat down…..

He was as obviously shaken by talking with Eric…..

About as much as I was!!!

Five minutes later, the tones tripped and siren wailed…..

For our neighboring Fire Department……

It was an MVA……Motor Vehicle Accident……

The Assistant Chief and I just looked at each other……

”Please GOD…….NO!!! was going through my head…..

Our tones tripped…..our siren went off…..

To assist at the MVA by blocking off the closest intersection…..

Three men left in our pick-up truck to do so…..

Five minutes later, our Chief was called to the scene……

Cell phones were buzzing…..

Calling ”connections” in the neighboring Fire department…..

Or even in the Ambulance Corp……

NOBODY would tell US, who was involved…..

BUT…..it was a ”Code 12”……fatal…..

We buzzed through the meeting…..

We WANTED to know if it was Eric……

At the end of the meeting, as the Secretary…..

I have to read the minutes I have written…..

For any corrections or ”approval as written”…..

I was flying through reading them….

The Chief returned to the building…..

Visibly shaken…….

”The meeting is ‘Suspended’…..” came the command…..

”Eric Hodge was fatally injured in that MVA!!!”

Men….grown men……cried……

They hugged each other…..

And cried some more…….

LOST was a friend…..

A Comrade, fellow firefighter…..

A Buddie……

And a ”Dad”!!!!

The Assistant Chief, the firefighter that got “kissed”, and I……

Went to the scene……to give our statements…..

To the Investigator there…..

To give them an idea of his state of mind beforehand…..

Weeks later, somebody told ME…..

”He committed ‘Suicide’!!”

I corrected them and said…..”No way!!!”

“People that commit suicide, don’t ‘buckle up’!!”

Eric was buckled!!

”What He did was an ‘act of stupidity’, I said……

”He was driving too fast and lost control on a curve!!”

We had a GREAT TIME with his funeral procession!!!

I arranged other Departments to join us…..

We had a mile long procession…..

With 16 pieces of equipment…..

From TEN different Departments!!!

His family told us……

”Lights and sirens are NOT an OPTION!!!”

“They ARE a REQUIREMENT!!!!”

Okay….so WHY am I telling YOU this????

Why am I making YOU reach for a Kleenex, right now???

(trust me…..MY EYES are moist right now too!!!)

We ALL have watched this economy SLAM into the sewer…..

In recent years, and Eric died SIX years ago……

PEOPLE are HURTING…….

PEOPLE are DUMBSTRUCK……

PEOPLE have NO IDEA what to do…..

If their J-O-B comes to a ”Screeching HALT” tomorrow…..

Soooooooo…..why are YOU sitting on your hands????

People need to hear what YOU have……

Or what YOU have learned…..

Is it for EVERYBODY you talk to????

HELL NO!!!!

But…..do YOU want to know something????

There sure are A LOT of Eric’s out there……

People that are so close to the end of their ropes…..

That they use the end of that rope…..

And tie it into a noose!!!!

I would rather see YOU waiting for them at the end…..

Oh HELL…….YOU should be A LOT higher on their rope…..

They don’t need a ”Get Rich Quick” Guru……

They NEED a friend……

A Teacher……

A ”Good Learner”……

A ”Good News Merchant”……

A ”Preacher of Plenty”……

A ”Can Do Artist”……

Could that be YOU??????

It Is TIME To REMOVE The "Training Wheels"!!

My wife and I have been married.....

Almost 26 years, this summer....

We have six kids.....

Or sometimes, I say......

"I have six kids, my wife has seven!!!"

They range in age from 10 to 23 years old.....

Three boys and three girls.....

Yeah...I know.....

My very own "Brady Bunch"

Have you ever noticed….

That each kid has their very own personality….

Quirks……

Characteristics…..

Habits….

And fears…..

BUT….have you noticed…..

They still point back to you, the parent…..

And all of YOUR quirks, habits, etc!!!

My youngest one, a ten year old boy…..

Poor kid has 3 sisters progressively above HIM!!

Anyhow, he is dead set AGAINST…..

Any form of change……

To get him to try, or do, anything new….

Is next to impossible…..

Years ago, we adopted a practice at meal time….

You could NOT say “NO” to any food served….

You HAD TO have at least what was called….

A ”No Thank You" portion….

Usually a small spoonful…..

So his impression of things changed…..

Once he had his ”No Thank You" portion!!

There are still things he clings to….

For his own personal comfort…..

Yet, we are trying to help him break free……

Recently, my wife was “volunteering” at a convention….

At the Rochester Riverside Convention Center….

The kids went with her….

The Convention Center has a two story escalator….



My son is deathly afraid of them…..

My wife, pretty much, forced him on it…..

He was almost crying and throwing a fit…..

BUT…..she guided him on….and off….

Do YOU want to know what????

He LOVED it!!!!

Matter of fact, while my wife was busy…..

Doing her volunteering thing….

He asked, ”Mom, can I go ride the escalators??”

Her post was near the base of the escalators….

So she was nearby……she said, ”Okay!!”

He went up and down on the escalators for an HOUR!!!!

The NEXT issue, is a big one for him…..

But I truly NEED to work with him on it….

He is ten years old and still has……

(Sorry Caleb, you WILL forgive me for writing this….some day!!)

”Training wheels” on his bicycle….

Last year with the Junior Youth Group from church….

He got picked on, just a little…..

So, this year, he is not going on the Group Bike Ride!! =-(

I need to help him learn how to ride….

Without the training wheels……



Do YOU want to know ”WHY??”

He will be blown away by the freedom…..

That he will have once he breaks free…..

Of what is…..To HIM……a Comfort Zone…..

And tries something NEW that he has been afraid of…..

For soooooooo long!!!

OUCH, that hurts!!!

Who have wanted to change the way they do things….

The way they think…..

So here I sit……

With my training wheels on…..

Not wanting to change what I am doing…..

If I didn’t remove the training wheels…..

BUT, recently, I removed another set of wheels…..

Ben Franklin lived from 1706 to 1790.....



He is the ONLY "Non-President" on U.S. currency.....

YES.....he was a VERY active "Founding Father".....

He helped birth the NEW nation......

Known as The United States Of America!!

Allow me to show YOU, Ben Franklin.....

Benjamin Franklin is known as......

**** a polymath

-which means a person of great learning in several fields of study

**** a leading author and printer

- he wrote Poor Richard's Almanac

- and published and printed The Philadelphia Gazette

**** a satirist

**** a political theorist

**** a politician

**** a statesman

**** a civic activist

**** a soldier

**** a diplomat

**** formed the first Public Lending Library

**** formed the first Fire Department in Pennsylvania

**** a scientist

-through his discoveries and theories for electricity



****an inventor

- things like bifocals, the lightning rod, a carriage odometer

- the Franklin stove




- the glass "armonica"



While on vacation in Williamsburg, VA in March....

We saw a demonstration of the glass armonica replica.....



He first saw it in France.....

Came back to the states and had it built......

Crystal bowls of varying sizes.....

A hole drilled out of the bottom.....

Cork placed in the hole to put it on a spindle.....

It made beautiful music!!

And still does, to this day!!!

As a writer, his wisdom was profound....

His Poor Richard's Almanac was very popular....

He made people aware of things.....

Relevant to their current day......

Politically, socially, and morally.......

Through stories and tales......

The amazing thing about those stories.....

Is they STILL teach US today!!!!

300 years AFTER they were originally penned!!

Most people will say that Ben Franklin.....

Was a gifted Man...

He was talented.....

He was blessed.....

He was a philosopher.....

Do YOU want to know the truth about Ben Franklin????



Ben Franklin WAS Ben Franklin.....

Because HE ALLOWED HIMSELF to BE Ben Franklin!!

Ben Franklin came from working class roots.....

His formal education came to an end at age 10.....

He worked for his father in his candle shop.....

At age 12, became an apprentice in his brother's print shop....

So HE did not get his Wisdom from scholars in schools....

He got his wisdom, his talent, his tenacity......

By ALLOWING himself to BE!!

He ALLOWED himself to become.....

He ALLOWED himself to be open....

He ALLOWED himself to listen.....

He ALLOWED himself to watch.....

He ALLOWED himself to be curious.....

Come on now, who in there right mind.....

Flies a kite in a lightning storm?????

He was no smarter than YOU or I.....

Until he ALLOWED himself to learn from his experiences....

From those experiences he started writing.....

As a young teenager, he secretly wrote....

Letters from Mrs Silence Dogood, a middle aged widow....

These letters became the talk of the town.....

At age 21, he started a group called Junto....

A group of "like minded aspiring artisans and tradesmen".....

"Who hoped to improve themselves".......

"While they improve their community!!!!"

WOW, where have I heard that before????

Do YOU see where I am trying to go with this my friend???

Ben Franklin was no special man.....

He was no different than YOU or I.......

But once he ALLOWED himself to BE........

He became whatever he wanted to BE!!!!

He invented, he wrote, he applied himself......

And the rest, as we say, is History!!

So WHAT is stopping YOU?????

Oh, YOU are going to hate me for this!!!!

YOU are stopping YOU!!!

Open yourself UP......

ALLOW yourself to BE......

ALLOW yourself to BECOME......

What YOU are supposed to become......

Because my great-grandchildren cannot wait.....

To be reading about YOU!!!!


One day, Mr Franklin was sitting on a bench....

A young boy approached him and asked him....

"Mr Franklin, I want to be a great writer, as YOU are....."

Can YOU teach me how to do it????"

Mr Franklin looked at the lad, stroking his chin....

He replied, "Yes, young man, I can.....to get started....."

"Go home and write some poems!!"

"Poems???" the young man queried....

"I want to be a great Author, as you are Sir!!"

"Yes, My Son", came the wise man's reply.....

"But, YOU have to start somewhere, first!!!"


What about YOU?????

In order to become something great.....

FIRST, You must ALLOW yourself to become great....

THEN, you have to get started!!!

Every Millionaire started out with NOTHING.....

They worked at it.....and allowed themselves....

To BECOME a Millionaire!!!

It Has To Become A SIXTH Sense!!

What truly IS a "Sixth Sense"????

I do not know the "literal" meaning......

BUT, to me it means it is a "natural" sense.....

Like breathing, feeling, etc!!

Recently, I was driving tandems to New Jersey....

"Tandems" is two 48 foot trailers.....



Fully loaded with a converter dollie.....

Connecting the second trailer to the "lead" trailer....

Full loads can be up to 44,000 pounds.....

Per trailer.....

Plus the weight of the trailers.....

The dollie and the truck tractor....

The total weight, legally, is 144k pounds!!



Total length can be up to 120 feet long!!

So the "faint of heart" should NOT be driving.....

Pulling tandems!!

I personally LOVE them!!

I LOVE a "challenge"!!

This day, in particular.....

I noticed was "not quite right"......

I have driven this truck long enough....

Pulled tandems OFTEN enough......

My truck was struggling to reach 64 mph.....

And it is governed to 65 mph....

And I have burned through a quarter tank of fuel...

In a short distance.....

Something isn't right!!

So at the next available "tandem area"....

I pulled in and broke apart my set.....

And put the front trailer in the rear....

And vice versa......

Once I got back onto the highway.....

My truck reacted differently!!!



WHY?????

The "original" second trailer.....

Was heavier than the "lead".....

And THAT is very unsafe.....

Switching them around....

Improved my safety.....

And the performance of my truck!!!

ALRIGHT Jason......time to "make sense"......

I did not NEED to be told.....

Nor go weigh the trailers.....

To "KNOW" that something was NOT right.....

With the two loads I was pulling.....

I have a natural instinct.......

Years of experience doing what I do.....

Has given me this sixth sense.....

What about YOU???

How do YOU work your business???

How do YOU talk to new people???

When YOU talk to people.....

Is it idle "chit-chat".....

Or true prospecting???

If you have been doing this awhile.....

Your sixth sense tells you......

Who the tire kickers are.....

And who the golden nuggets are!!

If I Only Knew The Consequences..........!!!

A few people have noticed......

That I have been VERY quiet online, lately.....

I received a couple of emails and PM's......

Asking me, "Jason, are YOU okay??"

It has been a very rough week......

Allow me to explain.......

For those of you that do not know......

I drive tractor trailer for my J-O-B.......

I commit almost 100 hours away from home.....

My drive home is about 30 miles.....

Most nights as I leave work......

I stop by a local convenience store........

To pick up a couple of cans of adult beverage.....

I consume them to relax....

On my drive home......

The other night, on the highway......

As I traveled over an overpass and around a curve.....

I saw a BUNCH of flashing yellow lights.....

And orange and black signs.....

GREAT......another construction zone.....

As I got closer.....



The "yellow lights" were on a row of police cars......

It ended up being a "Sobriety Check Point".....



I ditched my can of beer in my cup holder......

Covered it with the baseball hat I was wearing......

Moved my jacket over the beer on my seat......

As I stopped, the officer walked up to my window.....

He said, "Good Evening, Sir....."

"This is a Sobriety Checkpoint......."

"Have YOU had anything to drink tonight???"

I replied, "Yes Sir.....I had one with a friend...."

"After work tonight, just awhile ago....."

The lighting around the area.....

The Officer caught a glimpse of something.....

Shined his light into my car.......

"What IS that under the hat, Sir???"

I lifted up my hat to expose an open can of beer......

"Sir, please pull your car to the shoulder!" the Officer said.....

"Step out of the car" came the next command.....

The Officer on the side of the road.....

Ran me through the "Field Sobriety Test"......



I thought that I had passed.....

The Officer then asked me to...."Step this way!!"

He walked me over to a larger Police vehicle.....

"Sir, we need YOU to take a 'Breathalyzer test'....."

I was told.....

In New York, the penalty for refusing is worse....

So, I submitted.....

My BAC ended up being a simple, ".07".....

DWI in New York is ".08".....!!

WHEW.......or so I thought.....

I am a federally regulated C.D.L. holder.....

"C.D.L." is "Commercial Driver's License"

BAC for CDL drivers is.......

Believe it, or not......

".00".......no tolerance......

We are held at a higher standard.....

Even in our cars!!!

I got to "take a ride" in a squad car.....

Taken to the Police station......

Put thru the process.......

Given a Court Appearance ticket for the next morning......

I had to call my wife to come pick me up.......

That was worse than any other thing I have EVER done!!

The ride home was a very chilly ride.....

The subsequent evening at home was no better.......

The rest of this is way too personal.....
