Lonely......Lost.......Forgotten.........NOT ME!!!

It was somewhere near the first of July......

My wife and I were Newlyweds.....

Living and working in Colorado Springs, Colorado.....

My Mom called me from upstate New York.....

"Your Uncle Chuck died yesterday!!"

She told me the details on where and how....

He had been sick for awhile.....

When he died it was quick and painless!!

"I want to go home for the funeral!"

I told my wife, she wanted to come too!!

Uncle Chuck was my favorite Uncle....

As well as my "Confirmation Sponsor".....

I continued to say......

"The sad part is that I don't know......"

"IF I would be so willing, if it was my Dad!!"

My parents had been divorced since I was seven.....

Only getting to see him once or twice a year.....

The sad part truly is.....

THREE MONTHS later, I had to make that choice!!

At the time, I was an Insurance salesman.....

Some company by the name of Prudential.....

My wife and I lived in a townhouse in the Springs.....

After dinner I went on some sales calls.....

I first stopped by a neighbor's house.....

When I walked back to my car, it was odd.....

The curtains were open to our back deck.....

The sliding glass door was open.....

The outside light was on....

I tossed my briefcase into my car....

When I closed the door....

My wife heard it and ran to the door.....

My brother in law was on the phone and wanted ME....

I went inside and she handed me the phone....

This was LONG before cordless phones and cell phones!!

We get along great and joke around ALOT......

So, I started right in with the horsing around.....

After awhile he tried stopping me.....

"Jason, I need you to stop!!"

"No more joking, calm down please!!"

So, I settled and said, "What's up??"

"They found your Dad dead this morning!!"

"They figure he had been there two days!!"

My Dad lived in a Senior Citizen Apartment Building

They have a card on their door.....

That needs to be turned every day....

If the next day, it is not turned.....

They first call you....

Then they will enter the apartment....

Usually with Police and EMS there....

They figure he had turned his card for the next day....

Fell, hit his head, and died right there.....

Thus it took two days before his card was wrong!!

That evening, on the phone.......

I cried!!

I cried because my father died

My Dad died when I was seven!!

There's a BIG difference between the two!!





Next thing we find out.....

He had NOTHING to his name.....

No Life Insurance or anything.....

ALL of us kids would have to pitch in.....

To PAY for his funeral!!

Luckily, one of my brothers did some checking.....

My Dad was a World War 2 Veteran.....

So the Veteran's Administration picked up the tab....

No big fancy funeral with procession....

The funeral home let the family meet them graveside....

For a small, informal service.....

The next day, we had a Church Memorial Service.....

Followed by a gathering at one of my brother's house....

When we went through his stuff....

We learned things about him.....

He had his Army medical records.....

He was hurt or sick every month for something....

There was a picture that had been in the local paper.....

Of him and his four brothers.....

Off to War at the same time.....

He kept things we made while in Scouts.....

He kept things that HE considered special.....

But do you know what???

How much MORE special would it have been.....

IF we knew these things while he was ALIVE???

He died .....lonely....

Miserable.....

Lost......

Forgotten.....

Broke.....

What a SAD way to come to the end of LIFE!!!!





SO......why am I telling YOU this????

First off.......so that I can make a confession.....

Or is it a Proclamation???

I refuse to die like this!!!

I refuse to die alone!!!





BUT.....for YOU, My Friend......

Remember what I said earlier???

"I cried because 'My Father' died......"

"My Dad died YEARS before that!!!"

How are YOU doing with YOUR family???

Are YOU a "Good Dad"???

Are YOU a "Good Mom"????

(YES....this can happen with women too!!)

Joe Schroeder once told me......

"The ONLY people that will care how you look......"

"Will be the 8 people standing around YOUR deathbed!!"

If YOU were to die......TODAY.....

Will people cry because you are gone???

Or will they rejoice because you are gone???




I also stated that my Dad died broke....

On Disability forever......

Then Social Security.....

Pauper's wages from the government!!

Do NOT be a financial burden for your family!!

It is bad enough having the emotional burden

Do not let lack be a burden too!!!




MOST of you reading this....

Are trying to build your OWN economy......

Exclaimed the Nurse.......

"Yeah......we already KNOW!!!!" I said.....

The Nurse had that cocked-head, confused puppy look.....

We have seen that look for the past few months.......

We just gave birth to our SIXTH child......

Throughout the pregnancy, people asked.....

"Do you know if it's a 'boy' or a 'girl'???"

I would reply, "Oh, it IS a boy!!!"

"You had an ultrasound done?????"

Was usually the next question......

"NOPE......those are too expensive......."

"We just KNOW that it is!!!!"

THAT is when we FIRST saw the old.....

Cocked heads and funny looks on people!!!

Allow me to explain......

It was towards the end of 1998......

My wife and I had some issues to deal with….

Personal, financial, and very emotional……

It was a very tough time……

With some bright spots, here and there……

It is during these tough times….

As YOU will see, that I LEARN the most!!!




At this point in our lives……

We had been married 14 years…..

Had FIVE children already…..

Two boys and three girls…..

Ranging from 1 year to 12 years old…..

The job I had was “Local” driving….

Home every night……

During the pinnacle of this troubling time….

We had been having….

I got sent on an overnight trip…..

This trip took me to Michigan…..

I took my “required” time off in a motel…..

I do NOT sleep well in motels….

(Still do NOT to this day!!)

A friend had recently given me a booklet to read….

It was called ”Finishing Well”….

By Pastor Greg Laurie from California….

I have heard him speak, and liked him….

So I took the booklet to read!!




The booklet, ”Finishing Well”….

Is about people in the Bible…..

That started well….yet finished miserably….

Or those that started miserably….

And “finished well”, thus the title….

The main focus was about a man called “Caleb”….

He went into the Promised Land, as a spy…..

With eleven other men….

Caleb and Joshua were the only TWO that said…..

”Yes they are GIANTS……”

“But with God’s help we will be victorious!!!”

Unfortunately, the ten naysayers had the stronger voice…..

Conquer the land……they did not do…..

Thus the wandering in the desert for forty plus years…..

Until the naysayers died off…..

Moses had promised Caleb that HE would be blessed….

When he enters the Promised Land……

On that day, at age 85…..

Still strong and powerful…..

He stood before Joshua to receive what was promised!!




Alone in my motel room…..

I read every word…..

Was enthralled with the story……

I heard in my head…….

YES……I heard in my head…..

”Caleb Daniel”!!

I replied, ”Who is that???”

“Your son!!”, is what I heard next……

”Yeah….okay…..what son??? I asked….

”The one that will be born near your Birthday!!”

Okay, I thought….this is interesting…..

Being the diligent husband that I am…..

I paid attention to that monthly activity…..

Remembered the last time we got cozy…..

Thought…..ya know what???

It IS possible!!!

The next couple of weeks dragged….

I did NOT rush home to tell my wife……until…..

”Honey, shouldn’t you have had something by now??”

A trip to the drug store…..

A little stop in the bathroom……

”Guess what Honey???” my wife asked…..

I said, ”I know!! Come sit down!!”




It was the weirdest feeling…..

Over the next few months….

KNOWING that you KNOW…..

KNOWING that GOD gave YOU…..

A Heads Up about it too…..

What special thing is in my son’s future???

Big deal, Jason…..cool story…..

WHAT’S your point here????




GOD saw me at my lowest…..

Reached down to touch ME….

A truck driver from New York…..

Life was miserable….

Marriage had issues……

HE got me when I was alone…..

And spoke TO me!!

BUT…..do YOU want to know reality????

He speaks to ME every DAY!!!

It is just at this time in my life…..

My mouth was SHUT and my ears were OPEN!!!

I wasn’t ”busy” with LIFE so much…..

That I was able to RECEIVE……

What HE had to offer me!!!

How often have I heard the phrase……

”Be still and know that HE is GOD!!!”

Can I tell YOU another secret I have learned???

When I am too busy to hear HIM…..

He removes things that are distracting ME….

From listening to HIM!!!




AGAIN……Big Deal, Jason……

That’s GREAT for YOU……

But what does this have to do with ME????

PLENTY!!!!

God doesn’t want our ”Laundry List” of……

”Please God, Bless ME with……(fill in the blank)!”

Do YOU ever wonder why we have TWO ears….

And ONLY ONE mouth???

So that we listen twice as much…..

More than we speak!!!

BUT….we do NOT do that!!

Then we are soooooo busy…..

Family issues….

Kid’s sports…..

Home business…..

Facebooking….

Twittering…..

Texting……

Chatting…….

If YOU won’t LISTEN……

He will make it so that you DO!!!!




OH…..WAIT…..THIS IS THE BEST PART!!!




He wants to talk to YOU……

Because He has so much to tell YOU…..

So much to show YOU…..

And so much to BLESS you with!!!

It Is A REAR-VIEW Mirror

Every week, I drive about 2700 miles......

Mostly highway driving......

Most of the time with a 48 foot....

Or 53 foot long trailer.....

As I have said in the past.....

On occasion, TWO 48 footers in tandem!!

I shift UP through the 10 speeds.....

And downshift when needed.....

"Floating the gears".......

Which means, "not using the clutch" to do so.....



(THAT is a whole new note all by itself!!)



Recently, while eating lunch with a friend.....

He asked me, "What DANGERS do YOU face......."

"On a DAILY basis, that I do not?????

I stumbled upon that thought and replied.....

"I have NEVER thought about it!!"

And could NOT come up with an answer......

An hour down the road.......

While sitting in my "Thinking Seat"......

I answered his question, it follows......





"The Dangers I Face Every Day!!"

1) I have to WATCH what YOU are doing!

2) I have to "ANTICIPATE" what YOU "INTEND" to do!!

3) I have to leave myself an "Escape Route",
just in case what YOU "INTENDED" and the other guy
"INTENDED" puts ALL of us in a situation
NONE OF us anticipated!!

4) I have to be ready for changing situations on the road.....
tires blowing out, cars losing control,
debris falling from God knows where!!

5) I have to be able to handle changing weather
conditions and have experienced
ALL four seasons in ONE day!

6) Be able to repeat Step 1 thru 4......
10,000 times a day, because EACH
new passing vehicle
starts the cycle all over AGAIN!!




So I am paying attention to ALOT going on......

In front of me, beside me, and behind me......

I have LARGE rear-view mirrors on both sides.....



I admit, I do not scan them as often.....

As I probably should......

But I do have GREAT peripheral vision!!!

The rear-view mirror tells ME alot!!!

First off, if my trailer is STILL behind me!!!

- If my refrigeration unit is working properly

- Whether my lights are working

- Whether I am "maintaining" my space in my lane

- If I got passed that vehicle yet, or not

- Watch the vehicles passing me

- If Emergency Vehicles are behind me

- Yes, if that Police car wants to MEET me!!!

- I have witnessed "accidents" in my mirror




There is a whole slew of things......

That I can do with my rearview mirrors....



But I cannot dwell on what is in my mirrors.....

At 65 mph, there is ALOT more going on.......

In front of ME



Rather than in back of me

NOT that there are No DANGERS beside me.....

BUT there is MORE potential danger.....

Right in FRONT of me!!!

Some of YOU are probably saying.......

"Uhhhh, no duhhhh, Jason!!!"

Allow ME to cap off TODAY's lesson!!!!

YOU are "attempting" to do a Business.....

Online, offline, retail, wholesale, affiliate.......

YOU are using autoresponders.....

YouTube marketing......

Social Media marketing.....

Ezine articles and ezine blasts......

Online advertising.....

Off-line advertising.....

WHATEVER.......and HOWEVER you are doing it.......

ALOT of YOU are stuck.......

NOT going anywhere.....

YOU are totally deadlocked.......

STARING at YOUR rearview mirror......



What are YOU looking at?????

Your past.......

Where you heard people say to YOU......

"You'll NEVER succeed at this!!!"

"It's ALL a scam!!!"

"It's a Pyramid scheme!!!"

"YOU are a loser!!!!"

Should I continue?????





Also in your mirror.....

Is the fifteen other attempts.....

At a business.....

Where you failed miserably.....

Got no help or support upline.....

Spent WAY too much money.....

And didn't earn a thing!!!!





Also in your mirror.....

Are the few people that ARE following YOU!!

But you spend TOO MUCH time.....

Coddling them......

HOPE that they like YOU......

Call them TWICE a day.....

Cuz you don't want to LOSE them!!!

Heaven Forbid!!!!





All the while you are watching your mirror.....

YOU are NOT moving forward too fast

And the WORLD is passing YOU by!!!!





So sit in the passenger seat.....

Buckle UP.......

And listen to some.......

"Bad Ass Trucker Wisdom"







Cruise down YOUR highway of LIFE......

Staring OUT the windshield.....

At what IS happening in FRONT of YOU.....

YOU are moving FORWARD.....

AVOID the obstacles in FRONT of YOU.....

SWERVE when you NEED to swerve....

SLOW DOWN when and where you SHOULD......

STOP when YOU should STOP!!!

YOU are moving FORWARD......

Think......

LISTEN......

AND the naysayers.....

The "Get Rich Quickers"......

YOU'LL get passed by the GUY.....

"GREAT-NEW DEAL......$30k in 30 days!!"

So if THEY were "meant to" follow YOU.....

Not caring where YOU are going.....

They have their own agenda....

Their own goals......

Their own style.....

They will DROP off YOUR HIGHWAY......

They might catch up later....

BUT....don't worry about them!!!




A TRUE LEADER.......

Will move forward.....

Offer help to those that need it.....

Without commiting TOO MUCH time to any ONE person....

A LEADER will disregard the naysayers.....

BLAZE their own trail......

Move forward watching out for.....

ANY dangers.....

In front, behind, or beside them.....

And maneuver......

Around, Over, or Through them....

A LEADER is sitting right now......

Nodding their head......

Knowing what I just said.....

Will OPEN the eyes.....

For THOUSANDS of people!!!

Are YOU A "John Hancock"?????

I LOVE the way these thoughts come to me!!!!

Yesterday morning, I wrote a note......

"If It Is Called "Independence Day".....How Come YOU Are NOT?????"

Then my Pastor was sharing some facts about......

The signers of the Declaration of Independence



Fifty six men were sent to the Continental Congress.....

Held in Philadelphia.....

They were sent from the thirteen colonies.....

As that colonies representative......

There was nothing special about any ONE of them.....

Only nine of them were rich enough to own Plantations....

The rest were from various walks of life....

Store owners, tradesmen, farmers, etc......

ALL fifty-six men signed the Declaration.....

The King of England was NOT impressed, nor pleased.....

About the Declaration of Independence.......

While the war went on, the fifty six signers......

Were chased, captured, harrassed, destroyed.....

By the British Army......

Five were captured and tortured until they died....

Others had their homes and property.....

Ransacked and destroyed......

Others were on the run constantly......

Others lost their families.....

One man had to leave his wife's deathbed.....

In fear of being captured and killed himself......

But do YOU want to know what?????

I'd be willing to bet YOU......

That if they had to do it again.......

Each ONE would grab that stylus.....

Dip it in the bottle of ink.....

And sign their name on that parchment AGAIN!!!!



Especially if they could see what their signing......

Did for those thirteen colonies......

And the rest of the American territory!!!

So why did I mention ONLY, John Hancock?????

John Hancock, as everybody knows......

Signed his name extra large.....

Jokingly stating, his doing so.....

"So the King cannot deny that I signed it!"



His signature stands out from the rest.....

Top CENTER of ALL of the signatures.....

While everybody else.....

Signed a normal signature.....

Nothing special, nothing unique.....

Nothing out of the ordinary.......

Do NOT draw attention to ME.......

Eventhough their signature on it......

DID draw attention to THEM!!!!

So to YOU, my friends out there......

YOU have decided to try to become an Entrepreneur.....

YOU put yourself out there in the WORLD.....

If It Is Called "Independence Day".....How Come YOU Are NOT?????

Two hundred and thirty four years ago......

A group of political leaders from the then 13 colonies......

From the British Colonies of America.....

Met in the small city of Philadelphia.....

Signed a document penned by Thomas Jefferson.....

Declaring the Colonies "Independence"......

From the tyrannical leadership of the King of England!!!



The war for Independence had already started....

Hundreds of lives had been lost on the battlefields already.....

Dying for the "Cause" of Independence!!!

Ironically, now two hundred plus years later.....

Our "elected" leaders are doing similar "tyrannical leadership".....

Voting for legislation that their constituents have told them....

That they do NOT want it!!!!

They have and are continuing to raise our taxes....

By calling them "needed programs" for OUR benefit!!!

Yeah.......right!!!! =-(

Do WE "need" another revolution????

I don't know.....but real CHANGE is needed.....SOON!!!

Anyhow......two hundred PLUS years ago.....

We truly WON our Independence......

But are we really??????

Think about it for a moment......

Recently, I commented to somebody......

"FREEDOM is truly a 'state of mind'!!"

How do you figure that, Jason?????

If YOU are truly an INDEPENDANT person.....

Why are you a slave to a "J-O-B"?????

Where you go before a man......

Exchange YOUR TIME for a cash price.....

That HE, the man, determines.....

And if YOU go before him to ask for more......

He "might" show YOU the door and tell you to leave!!

If YOU are truly Independant......

Why haven't YOU set forth on a trail......

To work for and earn an income on your own??????

OUCH....this is gonna hurt!!!!!

YOU are "too afraid" to step out of YOUR "Comfort Zone"!!!!

Blaze a trail through the muck and grime......

Called "Entrepreneurship"!!!

Be willing to get some bumps and bruises along the way......

Be able to accept the fact......

That YOU just might fail......

At your first attempts out on your own......

Many GREAT business leaders DID fail......

More than ONCE, before they found.....

Their true success in life!!!

How many times did YOU fall OFF of a bicycle......

Before YOU were able to "Master" it??????

The Lumpy Carpet!!!

The “Home Meeting” is tomorrow night at 7pm…..

Sally, the stay-at-home Mom……

And up and coming home business Dynamo……

Was hosting a Company “Home Biz Op Meeting”…..

She has recruited some friends…..

Invited some family and friends over……

Other Members with prospects are coming.....

Her ”Manager” and HIS ”Manager”…..

Were going to do the ”Presentation”……

They asked Sally to……

”Give a short ‘background’ presentation…..”

“To ‘tell’ people about YOU!!!”

Sally had been trying to work on that….

In the meantime, she had to “clean-up”….

Make her living room look outstanding……

There was something wrong with the carpet….

She couldn’t put her finger on it…..

She called a “Carpet Cleaner” to come over….

It is 10 am, her doorbell rings…..

”Right on time! Just as he promised!!”

Sally realized, as she looked at the clock…..

Opening the door, she saw a man wear a casual uniform….

Company logo on one side of his uniform shirt……

”Good morning, I am ‘Ray’ and I am here to help YOU!!”

”Ray”, was the name embroidered on his shirt..…

Sally replied, ”C’mon in, let me show you the room!”

Ray took a look at the room, ”Oh MY!!”, he exclaimed…..

”I’ll be right back!!” as he turned around and went back to his van…..

A few moments later, he came back in……

Carrying a LARGE vacuum cleaner……

With LOTS of hose attachments……

He put a few of the attachments together….

”Ma’am…, Ray said……

”Your carpet is CLEAN……”

“For some reason, it is lumpy…..”

“Allow me to ‘get out’ the lumps!!”

He stuck the end of the hose under the carpet……

Sliding it under further……

He turned on the machine……

whirrrrrr…..whirrrrr……whirrrrrr……

Was the noise of the machine……

A “lump” started moving……..

whirrrrrr…..whirrrrr……THWUMP….

He left the machine on as he pulled out the hose…..

On the end of the hose was a “clump” of stuff……

He turned off the machine……

Removed the “clump”, setting it aside…….

Stuck the hose back under the carpet……

And turned it back on……

whirrrrrr……whirrrrr……THWUMP…..

One more clump……

Another clump……

Another clump……

MORE and MORE…….

Ray starting looking closer at the clumps…..

Each clump had something written on them…..

Things like……

”Didn’t finish college”

“Recovered Alcoholic”

“Dysfunctional family”

“Up and Down Weight Loss”

“Work Two Jobs To Pay Bills”

Ray is a very smart man……

He noticed the ”Home Biz Op” pamphlets…..

On the table in the center of the room……

And the “Company” boxes stacked in a front room…..

”Ma’am……may I call you Sally??”

She nodded your head…..

”Allow ME to give YOU some advice…..”

“To succeed in YOUR business……

Sally emphatically shook her head…..

Ray continued……

”YOU are trying to portray yourself……”

“As a SUCCESSFUL Business Owner…….”

“EVERY time you talk to people…..”

“About YOUR business, you are embarrassed…..”

“About YOUR PAST!!!!”

Sally’s head drooped, as she nodded “YES”……

Ray puts his hand on her shoulder and says……

”Everytime you START to say something…..”

“About your past, you SWEEP it under the rug….”

“May I give tell YOU something serious???”

Again….she nodded…….

”PEOPLE today are hurting……”

“The economy sucks, unemployment is rising……”

“New jobs are few and far between…….”

“People are LOOKING for an income source…..”

“The ‘Home Biz Op’ route looks easy…..”

“BUT……people are VERY hesitant…..”

“To let go of what little money they have……”

“With PEOPLE who ARE NOT REAL!!!”

“YOU……Sally, have been down the SAME paths…..”

“As the people YOU are reaching…….”

“They NEED to hear that YOU have…..”

“BEEN THERE…….AND DONE THAT!!!!”

“THEN…..they will follow YOU…..”

“Because YOU have overcome……”

“What THEY are going through……”

“Take YOURSELF off of the pedestal…..”

“And WALK beside them……”

“BE REAL…..”

“BE TRUE…..”

“BE YOURSELF….”

“BE AUTHENTIC…..”

“And the rest……..My Dear…..”

“Will become HISTORY!!!!”



Sally was awestruck……

But grateful for the words…..

From a ”Carpet Cleaner”……

As Ray was packing up his equipment…..

He said, ”May I invite YOU……”

“To a Community of People……”

“That are REAL, TRUE, and AUTHENTIC…..”

“Led by a former ‘truck driver’…….”

“And a former ‘overweight housewife’……”

“Where for EVERYBODY learns how to……”

“Change Your Mind….”

“Change Your Income….”

“Change Your Life!!!”

“You cannot AFFORD me then!!”



Sooooo…..to ALL of the Sally’s……

How LUMPY is YOUR carpet????

Stop sweeping your past under it……

Don’t make TROPHIES out of YOUR past……

Just DON’T hide it……

People NEED to know where YOU have been…..

And WHERE you can TAKE them…..

Is There An Eric In YOUR Life????

I have said in previous writings….

That I have been a Volunteer Firefighter…..

For almost eight years now….

In that time, I have seen “moderate” amounts….

Of tragedy, destruction, personal injury, or loss of life…..

I have been a Lieutenant and Captain on various trucks….

I was Company Secretary for a number of years…..

But NOTHING could have prepared me…..

For what I am about to tell YOU…….

In the Spring of 2004, our Fire Company received…..

A check for 20 thousand dollars from a local widow…..

We were asked to use it wisely……

I suggested during a Business Meeting…..

”We need NEW Dress Uniforms……”

“Our old ones look like old Greyhound bus driver’s uniforms….”

“And the blue shirts purchased over time, do not match!!!”

Well….when YOU suggest, you usually end up…..

Heading up that committee!!

The uniforms we decided on cost a little over $400…..

Per firefighter……with approximately 20 interested……

We LOOKED sharp……still do!!

The committee decided to get “nameplates”…..

For every firefighter……

With or without ordering a uniform!!



At the October Business Meeting, they had arrived……

I was handing them out to people, before the meeting…..

I handed one to one man, his first name is Eric…..

He looked at it and asked me….

”What’s this for??”

I explained what it was for…..he handed it back saying…..

“You can keep it, I won’t need it after tomorrow!!”

”Ohhhh, okay!”, I said and went down the table to the next man….

A few minutes later, I heard another firefighter say……

”That was odd, Eric kissed me on the cheek and said ‘Good-bye’!”

OH MY GOD!!

It HIT me….finally, on what Eric said to me…..

I literally dropped what I was doing and headed for the door…..

I looked across the parking lot……

His car was on the other side…..

He was sitting in it…..

I headed straight for it….

After a little small talk, he asked me to sit in the car with him!!

Eric worked for a LARGE International Company…..

His building, his position, and his job

Were being eliminated at the end of the month…..

Unfortunately, Eric is a BIG man with a short fuse…..

One day, he got into a discussion with his Manager….

Such to the degree, Security walked him out….

And the local Police were outside to help, if needed!!

Because of this discussion, Eric was just terminated….

On this day that I was talking with him!!!

He was told, NOW, he lost the package he would’ve gotten….

At the end of the month!!

No severance pay….

No vacation pay….

No Health coverage…..

Eric had custody of his two kids…..

”Jason, what the HELL can I do NOW???”

“I gotta take care of my kids!!!”

A moment later, an Assistant Chief walked up to the car…..

”We cannot have a meeting without a Secretary??” he said…..

I asked him to talk to Eric…..

Before I got out of the car, I grapsed Eric’s hand and said….

”Go HOME!!! After the meeting, a bunch of US will be up…..”

“We’ll take you out drinking, if you want to, AND……..”

“DON’T DO ANYTHING STUPID!!!!!”

I went into the meeting, which had started….

Ten minutes later, the Assistant Chief walked in and sat down…..

He was as obviously shaken by talking with Eric…..

About as much as I was!!!

Five minutes later, the tones tripped and siren wailed…..

For our neighboring Fire Department……

It was an MVA……Motor Vehicle Accident……

The Assistant Chief and I just looked at each other……

”Please GOD…….NO!!! was going through my head…..

Our tones tripped…..our siren went off…..

To assist at the MVA by blocking off the closest intersection…..

Three men left in our pick-up truck to do so…..

Five minutes later, our Chief was called to the scene……

Cell phones were buzzing…..

Calling ”connections” in the neighboring Fire department…..

Or even in the Ambulance Corp……

NOBODY would tell US, who was involved…..

BUT…..it was a ”Code 12”……fatal…..

We buzzed through the meeting…..

We WANTED to know if it was Eric……

At the end of the meeting, as the Secretary…..

I have to read the minutes I have written…..

For any corrections or ”approval as written”…..

I was flying through reading them….

The Chief returned to the building…..

Visibly shaken…….

”The meeting is ‘Suspended’…..” came the command…..

”Eric Hodge was fatally injured in that MVA!!!”

Men….grown men……cried……

They hugged each other…..

And cried some more…….

LOST was a friend…..

A Comrade, fellow firefighter…..

A Buddie……

And a ”Dad”!!!!

The Assistant Chief, the firefighter that got “kissed”, and I……

Went to the scene……to give our statements…..

To the Investigator there…..

To give them an idea of his state of mind beforehand…..

Weeks later, somebody told ME…..

”He committed ‘Suicide’!!”

I corrected them and said…..”No way!!!”

“People that commit suicide, don’t ‘buckle up’!!”

Eric was buckled!!

”What He did was an ‘act of stupidity’, I said……

”He was driving too fast and lost control on a curve!!”

We had a GREAT TIME with his funeral procession!!!

I arranged other Departments to join us…..

We had a mile long procession…..

With 16 pieces of equipment…..

From TEN different Departments!!!

His family told us……

”Lights and sirens are NOT an OPTION!!!”

“They ARE a REQUIREMENT!!!!”

Okay….so WHY am I telling YOU this????

Why am I making YOU reach for a Kleenex, right now???

(trust me…..MY EYES are moist right now too!!!)

We ALL have watched this economy SLAM into the sewer…..

In recent years, and Eric died SIX years ago……

PEOPLE are HURTING…….

PEOPLE are DUMBSTRUCK……

PEOPLE have NO IDEA what to do…..

If their J-O-B comes to a ”Screeching HALT” tomorrow…..

Soooooooo…..why are YOU sitting on your hands????

People need to hear what YOU have……

Or what YOU have learned…..

Is it for EVERYBODY you talk to????

HELL NO!!!!

But…..do YOU want to know something????

There sure are A LOT of Eric’s out there……

People that are so close to the end of their ropes…..

That they use the end of that rope…..

And tie it into a noose!!!!

I would rather see YOU waiting for them at the end…..

Oh HELL…….YOU should be A LOT higher on their rope…..

They don’t need a ”Get Rich Quick” Guru……

They NEED a friend……

A Teacher……

A ”Good Learner”……

A ”Good News Merchant”……

A ”Preacher of Plenty”……

A ”Can Do Artist”……

Could that be YOU??????
